The Rise Of Video Communications

“Ninety per cent of all traffic on the network is going to be video by 2014”  is the eye catching headline in the Chartered Institute of Marketing's monthly magazine “the marketer’.

This statistic come courtesy of Amanda Jobbins, Cisco’s VP of technology & corporate marketing for Europe.  She goes on to add; “In analogous terms, most organisations have built only a country road for video, but now they are going to need a superhighway”.

Seems like CIM are fully bought into the concept of video based communications.  Later in the same edition there is an interesting article called ‘5 reasons to click and play’ which discusses the rise and rise in the use of video.  The article goes on to discuss why we should do video, how video is being used, whether video will boost your SEO rankings, what makes video so viral, and how much it may cost.  Check it out if you can - all in all, an nice short article to help your thoughts on using video.

One reason to read the article.  For many of us SEO ranking is an interesting challenge. The article suggests that video could be the easiest way to get your brand on page one of a Google search.  The article notes studies by Forrester Research suggesting that videos themselves have a 50 times better chance of appearing on the first page of “blended” search results than web pages.

The article also quotes a guy called Adam Bunn, head of SEO at Greenlight Search, who says that; “Video is more compelling than comparable text content, so can contribute to search engine rankings as part of a link-baiting strategy”.

Finally, from the article, a couple of mind bending facts:

Video streaming through social networking sites increased 98% year-on-year in 2009 according to Nielsen.

And, the equivalent of 46.2 years of YouTube videos are watched via Facebook each day.
